2013…You Were Lovely!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you had a wonderful break with your loved ones and that being back to reality isn’t too much of a shock. I know I’m a bit late to this party and you’ve no doubt read countless highlights posts over the last few days already, but I used the Christmas break as complete and utter down time. I jumped at the chance to unplug and spend time with all my favourites and I returned to work this week refreshed and ready to take on all that 2014 has to bring. But first…time for a recap! 2013 was a pretty happy year for many reasons, a year where I struggled sometimes to figure out what path I wanted to take as a stylist but ultimately one that brought many exciting opportunities my way! I decided during the course of this year to change the focus of Style Serendipity from being an exclusive wedding blog, to focus on styling and projects that I was involved in. It was a scary move to make but one which I’m so glad I did. Even more importantly, it was a year where I met many inspiring and creative people who I am now honoured to call friends.

In January I shared the magical day (even if it was grey and raining!) that was spent at Ballyfin Demesne with Paula O’Hara for Confetti Magazine. Inspired by botanical gardens and Edwardian features this shot was one of my favourite from the day.

In February I was delighted to come on board and style another Editorial for Confetti Magazine. This time at Markree Castle in Sligo with Aga of White Tea.  Creating the sense of a warm Summer fete was no mean feat in typical Irish winter weather but fun details like the tandem bike and gorgeous cakes and accessories helped to bring a bit of colour into the day.

Also in February (it was a busy few weeks!) I jumped at the chance to style an editorial with Jacob and Annie of Brumley and Wells. I couldn’t imagine a more stunning location than Killruddery House and it was one of my favourite shoots to date! Seeing it featured on Once Wed was like a cherry on top. I’m heading to Italy soon to style a look book with Jacob and Annie again so I’m excited to recreate some of the magic (hopefully under some Italian sun!)

In May the wonderful Anne-Marie Bouchard of AMBphoto flew in from Canada to help bring my sonnet to the Irish coast to life. The quintessentially Irish palette has had me captivated for quite some time so it was a thrill to finally use it as a source of inspiration. Seeing this shoot again on Once Wed and on the pages of BASH Magazine was certainly a high point of the year.

In July the grounds of Malahide Castle played host to an editorial with D’Arcy Benincosa on what has to have been one of the hottest days of the year. Annmarie O’Leary of A New Leaf created the perfect blooms yet again, the showstopper piece being this bouquet that could be rotated to showcase two different styles!

In October I was thrilled to to do prop styling for a DIY feature for BASH Magazine with Nathalie Marquez Courtney. The trick to get those pastel jars looking so perfect was so simple, I couldn’t believe it. Discovered by DIY queen Nikki, all you need is a balloon, cut at the opening and then slip it over the end of the jar, easy peasy!

October was an exceptionally busy month but one that brought many new exciting projects, not least the chance to do the prop styling for FEAST Magazine and Donal Skehan. While it was a huge amount of work and a few last minute moments of stress, it reinforced that prop styling for a whole range of different settings is something that I really love to do. 12 Henrietta St couldn’t have been a more perfect location for the final Feast and is a venue I won’t be forgetting in a hurry!

I was delighted to be asked to style the new collection for The White Gallery Boutique (the lovely Rachel owner as so many gorgeous gowns you wouldn’t believe it!) and I’m excited to share more from this stunning shoot soon, which took place in November. Isn’t the photo below by Paula O’Hara beautiful?

Also in November I jumped at the chance to style an intimate engagement dinner for two of my closest friends and showcase all that the gorgeous Ballyvolane House has to offer, a highlight being the amazing local food. This shoot is due for publication in the coming months so I’ll look forward to sharing more of the celebration then.

One of the highlights of December was styling Emily’s 30th Birthday celebration. Having two such special dinners to style in the last months of 2013 really reinforced what really matters. Spending time to celebrate and enjoy friends and family over a meal, well I can think of few things I enjoy more in life! Rincy captured the spirit and images of the evening perfectly and shared them in a feature on Decor8.

So 2013…there you have it, you were indeed lovely! A bit scary at times, but pushing beyond my comfort zone was all part of the fun. Thank you so much to anyone who has stopped by here over the last year. I know there were quite a few changes to the content, but I hope there will be plenty more interior, food and wedding styling to inspire in 2014. Every interaction and comment was a treat, so thank you everyone for your support this year, wishing you all a wonderful 2014…bring it on!
