Wedding dress trends have stayed pretty consistent over the last few years with frothy lace, flowing fabrics and an emphasis on rustic chic all dominating the catwalks. Very slowly though, I’m starting to notice a change here and there, most excitingly towards more sculptural contemporary dresses! I thought I’d share some of my favourite statement dresses discovered recently, which would be amazing for a city wedding and modern couple!

This Douglas Hannant dress is particularly crazy, but suits Wendy and Kelvin’s fashion forward New York wedding to a ‘T’. It’s definitely not for the faint hearted bride, but I love that she has taken the leap to really make a statement and made the look all her own. Sculptural but still flowing and beautifully captured by KT Merry, check out similar in Douglas Hannant’s 2013 collection.
For a more romantic take on this modern trend, Lanvin has embraced the oversized bow this season, seen everywhere from his wedding gowns to bridemaid dresses. Check out more images of it in this stunning wedding by Bash Please
Draping, the perfect hint of colour and stunning satin shows how even the simplest detail can bring the wow factor! How amazing is this Carolina Herrera dress?! I’m more than a little bit obsessed with it to be honest even though it is totally different to the kind of dress I usually lust after. Set against the backdrop of a modern city wedding in San Francisco it’s well worth seeing more over at Once Wed

So how do you make this look your own? Keep in mind the setting of your wedding. This look works best at a modern and urban wedding rather than rustic and wild but then again why not make your own rules along the way and go with what feels right! If you love the idea of oversized bows and sculptural details but you’re not sure you want to embrace it in your own dress, these adorable dresses are available over at Net a Porter and could be the perfect look for your bridemaids! (though be warned, they are on the very pricey side!)

So have I convinced you that modern and fresh might be a trend worth considering? Either way, watch this space, I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of it over the coming year!
